What Is KP Astrology and How It Differs from Vedic

· 2 min read ·

KP astrology — Krishnamurti Paddhati — is a modern system developed by Prof. K. S. Krishnamurti. It keeps the Vedic foundation but adds precision, which is why many people choose it for clear yes/no and timing questions.

The key difference: sub-lords

Traditional Vedic astrology works mainly with signs and nakshatras. KP adds a further division — the sub-lord — dividing each nakshatra into unequal parts based on the Vimshottari dasha. The sub-lord is the deciding factor in a KP reading, which makes predictions more specific.

Placidus houses

KP uses the Placidus house system with cusps, rather than whole-sign houses. This changes which house a planet is judged to influence and often gives sharper event timing.

When KP shines

  • Specific questions (“Will I get this job?”)
  • Event timing (marriage, property, travel)
  • Horary (Prashna) readings from a number 1–249

Frequently asked questions

Is KP better than Vedic? Neither is “better” — KP is more specific for timing and yes/no questions, while classical Vedic gives a broader life picture. Many astrologers use both.
